Frequently asked questions

Questions teachers, parents and districts ask.

Short answers, with links to the page that carries the full text. Classopoly Basic is free for teachers; the privacy and data governance framework is the one place a commitment about student data is made.

What Classopoly is

What is a classroom economy?

A classroom economy is a way of running a class in which students earn a classroom currency for their work and behaviour, pay for things such as the rent on their desk, and spend what is left on privileges they choose. Classopoly runs that economy for a teacher: salaries on payday, rent on a schedule, classroom jobs, a class store and a statement every student can read.

Who is Classopoly for?

Middle school teachers, in any subject. It is a classroom-management tool first. The financial literacy comes from students handling a budget on the schedule the teacher sets: a salary that arrives, rent that comes due and choices about what to buy.

Is the money real?

No. Classopoly dollars exist only inside the class. Nothing is bought with real money, and no payment details are collected from students or parents.

Pricing and plans

Is Classopoly free?

Classopoly Basic is free for teachers, and we intend to keep it that way. Everything a teacher can do in Classopoly today is part of Basic: class sections, students, salaries, rent, jobs, the store, the seating chart and the student dashboards.

What is Classopoly Pro?

Classopoly Pro will add financial education features for middle grades teachers who teach financial education as a subject. It is not available yet. We are not naming its features, price or timing until they are settled, and this page will change when they are.

Will Basic become paid once Pro exists?

That is not the plan. Basic is the product teachers use today, and Pro is being built as an addition to it, not a replacement for it.

Does a district need to sign anything before a teacher starts?

No. Teachers create their own free account and set up a class themselves. A district that wants to review the service first will find the agreement on the privacy page, and the districts page walks through the parts reviewers ask about.

Getting started as a teacher

What do I need to start?

A free teacher account and a few minutes. You create a class section, give it a classroom with desks, set the salary and rent schedule, and add jobs and store items. The Help page inside the app walks through each step once you are signed in.

How do students join?

With a class code or QR code the teacher shows them. Students do not need an email address, and teachers can print login cards for a whole class at once.

Do students need to install anything?

No. Classopoly runs in a web browser, so there is nothing to install on school devices.

Can I show it on a projector?

Yes. The seating chart has a Full page view that fills the screen for a projector or whiteboard, and the Students tab has a Present view of the roster for the same purpose.

Can I use it with Canvas, Schoology or Google Classroom?

Classopoly is a website, so you can link to it from Canvas, Schoology, Google Classroom or anywhere else you post links for students. There is no roster sync or grade passback: students sign in with their Classopoly login.

Parents and students

Is my child's data sold or used for advertising?

No. Classopoly shows no advertising, sells no student or teacher data, and runs no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts on classopoly.co; a test in the codebase checks every resource the public pages load. The written commitment is in the privacy and data governance framework.

Does Classopoly need my child's real name?

No. A student appears under whatever name is on the class roster, and that can be a pseudonym such as a nickname or a number. The teacher sets the name when adding a student, and when a student joins with the class code the teacher hands out, the student enters a first name and an optional last name or initial, and picks which classmate they are only when two share a first name; the teacher can change the name shown at any time and keeps the key that links it to a student. No email address is asked for.

Can other students, or the public, see my child's balance?

No. Every student and teacher screen requires a sign-in, and a student’s screen shows only that student. Nothing about a student is published on the public site.

Can I see, correct or delete my child's record?

Yes, through the school. Start with your child’s teacher: a teacher sees everything recorded about a student in their class, can change the name a student appears under, and can remove a student from the class. Requests that go beyond that reach us through the school; the parents page is the notice teachers share with families, and the framework sets out the rights it answers to.

How does Classopoly handle students under 13?

Students never give an email address. A student either receives a login from the teacher or joins with the class code the teacher hands out, entering a name and choosing a username and a PIN; nothing else is collected from a student directly beyond what they do in class. How that works for students under 13 in a school setting is set out in the framework.

Schools and districts

What if my whole school or district is interested?

Contact us. Email support@classopoly.co or use the contact form, and tell us the school or district and roughly how many teachers. Teachers can start on their own free accounts in the meantime.

Where is data stored?

On Heroku and Amazon Web Services, in U.S. data centers. The browser’s connections to Classopoly are HTTPS only.

Is there a Data Processing Addendum?

Yes. The Data Processing Addendum is part of the framework, alongside the privacy policy, the terms and the parent notice, and the signed-ready PDF is on the same page. Districts review it there; the districts page quotes the parts reviewers ask about first.

Does Classopoly integrate with our student information system or single sign-on?

Not today. Teachers add their own students, and students sign in with a Classopoly login. Nothing is pulled from a district system.

How long is data kept, and how is it deleted?

Teachers remove students and close class sections themselves, and a teacher can ask us to delete their account. What is kept, for how long and how it is destroyed is set out in the framework; this page does not restate it.

Accessibility and support

Is Classopoly accessible?

We work to WCAG 2.1 AA and do not claim full conformance yet. The accessibility page lists what works today and the known gaps.

How do I get help?

Email support@classopoly.co or use the contact form. Teachers who are signed in have a Help page with step-by-step answers, and students have their own.
